Modem Notes

• MODEM HAS BEEN DISCONTINUED BY SONIC.
• Standard 0/35, syncs on the inside and outside pairs, DHCP, routed config.
• Modem is accessed locally at http://gateway.sonic.net (http://192.168.42.1).
• The gateway address differs from what you may expect in order to avoid double-NAT issues.
• There is no power button.
• The power supply for these modems has two separate parts - a cable that plugs into the wall, and a cable that plugs into that cable then into the gateway.
• "Broadband 1" and "Broadband 2" lights will flash slowly when not training, and fast while training. The lights will go solid green when sync has been established.
• This unit will take 3 solid minutes to boot up and surf.
• Devices connected via the red ethernet port labeled "Ethernet Broadband" will be unable to surf. This port is only used if gateway is only being used as a router, which is not a supported configuration.
• The default password located on the side of the modem. Prompting for a hint in the web interface indicates which code to use.
• Changes affecting IP allocation may require a release/renew on the connected computers and potentially a modem reboot.

Modem Interface

The modem interface can be accessed through a browser by surfing to http://gateway.sonic.net (or http://192.168.42.1).

Dynamic IP

This is the standard default configuration.

• Log into the modem's interface at gateway.sonic.net
• Click the "Broadband" icon under "Summary"
• Click "Link Configuration"
• "Choose Interface type" should have "Automatic Ethernet/DSL" selected by default.
• Under the "Broadband IP Network (Primary Connection)" heading select "Obtain IP address automatically (dynamic IP or DHCP)"
• Select "Obtain DNS information automatically"
• Click "Save"

Static IP

• Log into the modem's interface at gateway.sonic.net
• Click the "Broadband" icon under "Summary"
• Click "Link Configuration"
• "Choose Interface type" should have "Automatic Ethernet/DSL" selected by default.
• Under the "Broadband IP Network (Primary Connection)" heading select "Manually specify IP address settings"
• Input the IP address, netmask and gateway information provided via email or the Fusion IP address Member Tool.
• Select "Manually specify DNS information"
• Input the Primary Server, 50.0.1.1 and Secondary Server, 50.0.2.2, and domain "sonic.net", or settings of your choice.
• Click "Save"

LAN Subports

LAN Subports allow you to essentially bridge any number of ethernet ports on the modem and allow them to obtain a dynamic or be statically assigned a WAN IP directly from Sonic.net opposed to being assigned a local private NAT address.

For example, you can set ethernet port one as a LAN Subport, then put a router behind it, and that router will either obtain an IP via DHCP from us, or can be assigned one of a circuit's static IPs. If you have static IP service, you will need more than a single static IP for LAN Subports to function, as one IP must be assigned to the modem.

The others in your four or eight IP block can be assigned to devices on one or more of the Ethernet ports which are configured as LAN Subports. Devices connecting to the WiFi or Ethernet ports which are not configured as LAN Subports will be issued a private NAT IP.

• Log into the modem's interface at gateway.sonic.net
• Click the "Broadband" icon under "Summary"
• Click "Link Configuration"
• Under "LAN Subports" check the "Enable" box
• Select a LAN port to map to Primary Connection (you can set any port, several of them or all of them)
• Click "Save"
• Reboot modem

Bridge mode

This configuration is not recommended or supported. We suggest instead using LAN Subports if you have your own router and prefer that it obtain or be assigned an IP address directly.

Note: if you configure your Pace 5168n as a basic bridge, Sonic.net Support staff may need you to reset your modem to its default state for troubleshooting purposes. If you require technical assistance with your circuit, please reset your settings to one of the above modes before contacting technical support.

• Log into the modem's interface at gateway.sonic.net
• Click the "Broadband" icon under "Summary"
• Click "Link Configuration"
• Under "Routing" uncheck the box labeled "Enable (Default is enabled. Routing disabled = Bridge mode)"
• Click "Save"
• Reboot the modem

Note: Some versions of the Pace firmware require technical support to bridge the modem remotely. If you encounter issues after bridging the modem, please reset it and call technical support for assistance.

Factory Reset

A factory reset will change all gateway settings back to default. To do so:

• Hold the red reset button on the back of the gateway down for 15 seconds.
• The Power LED will turn red. After 15 seconds it will turn green again. Let go of the reset button.
• Allow a couple of minutes for the gateway to reboot.
