What is Wi-Fi 7?
Wi-Fi 7 is the newest version of the Wi-Fi standard and builds on Wi-Fi 6/6E technology by offering even faster speeds thanks to wider channels, denser signal encoding, and multi-link operation. This makes Wi-Fi 7 especially useful in environments with numerous devices and supports high‑bandwidth applications where consistent connectivity matters. It can deliver wireless speeds up to 6Gbps under ideal conditions which is three times faster than Wi-Fi 6/6E limitations that were capped out at about 2Gbps.
Devices that are Wi-Fi 7 capable are able to efficiently utilize the higher speeds the best. However, depending on how old the device in question is, it may have speed limitations; Factors like the device’s age and capabilities, distance from the router, interference from other networks or electronics, and the wireless environment overall will greatly affect speed test results. While Wi-Fi can be affected by many external factors, many issues can be improved through troubleshooting. For help, see our wireless troubleshooting guide.
| Generation | IEEE Standard | Device Type | Theoretical Maximum | Real-World Speeds |
| WiFi 7 | 802.11be | Modern computers, phones, tablets | 46 Gbps | Up to 6 Gbps |
| WiFi 6 / 6E | 802.11ax | Modern computers, phones, tablets | 9.6 Gbps | Up to 2 Gbps |
| WiFi 5 | 802.11ac | Mid-range computers, phones, tablets | 6.9 Gbps | Up to 800 Mbps |
| WiFi 4 | 802.11n | Older phones, tablets, budget computers | 600 Mbps | Up to 300 Mbps |
| WiFi 3 / 2 | 802.11a/g | Devices manufactured before ~2010 | 54 Mbps | Up to 54 Mbps |
| WiFi 1 | 802.11b | Older devices (pre-2000s) | 11 Mbps | Up to 11 Mbps |
