Fiber Frequently Asked Questions
Can I have a Static IP? - No, at this time Static IP's are not available on Sonic Gigabit Fiber.
Can I have IPv6? - Yes but the L.A. area is still under construction. For more info about IPv6 please see our IPv6 page.
Can the ONT be relocated / moved? - The ONT is not intended to be moved once it has been installed. If you want to discuss the possibility of relocating your ONT, please reach out to our Support team.
How long does a typical installation take? - An installation can take up to four hours. But most installations only require about 90 minutes to complete.
Does Sonic Gigabit Fiber have a data cap? - Nope! Sonic doesn't believe in data caps.
Is Sonic Gigabit Fiber compatible with my existing home security service? - Most home security systems are compatible with Sonic Gigabit Fiber, but for the definitive answer you should consult your home security provider.
Can I use my own equipment? - You can opt out of the RG rental and utilize your own RG solution. However, Sonic does not provide Support for the configuration / set-up of third party devices.
I don't need phone service, can I have internet only? - Currently the only service option we offer with internet only is our 10Gbps Standard Fiber service. All other connectivity services include both internet and phone.
How many Ethernet Jacks do I get? - With a typical installation you get one Ethernet jack.
What's the difference between 1Gbps Fusion Fiber service and 10Gbps Standard/Fusion Fiber services? - Both 1Gbps and 10Gbps Fusion Fiber services have all of the same features, 10Gbps is just faster. 10Gbps Standard Fiber has the same internet.
What is the difference between 10Gbps Standard Fiber and 10 Gbps Fusion Fiber? - Fusion Fiber 10Gbps service is data plus 1 phone line. The cost and features of this service are the same as our 1Gbps Fusion Fiber service, just faster. Standard Fiber is a data only service. Since it does not include a phone line, there are no taxes associated with service.
Can I upgrade from 1Gbps Fusion Fiber to 10Gbps Standard Fiber or 10 Gbps Fusion Fiber? - We currently do not have a way for existing 1Gbps Fiber customers to upgrade to either one of our 10Gbps services but we are working on it.
Is 10Gbps Standard Fiber or 10Gbps Fusion Fiber available in my area? - The best way to check if our 10Gbps services are available at your location, search your address here - https://www.sonic.com/availability.
Is there anything stronger than standard WiFi? - WiFi 6 is now here! WiFi 6 can strengthen your current wireless connection far beyond standard WiFi protocols! You can find more information on that in: WiFi 6 and how it helps
Can I keep my existing service if I do not want to upgrade? - Yes, but upgrading technology is highly recommended for a number of reasons: Sonic Fiber is faster, cheaper, and more reliable than other technologies. That is why we upgrade customers automatically once their address qualifies.
However, if you do wish to retain legacy service, you can do so.
Because our costs are significantly higher when delivering service over copper, a $20/month legacy technology fee will be added to your bill to cover the overhead of Sonic supporting these legacy technologies with a diminishing number of customers.
What are the differences between Sonic Fiber and my existing Sonic service? - The answer depends on which service you are upgrading from:
- Fusion DSL is a legacy connectivity technology that transfers data and voice service using electrical signals over copper line infrastructure that was built for telephones. Because of aging infrastructure and limitations of the technology, DSL is much more susceptible to outages than fiber, and can be compromised due to mitigating factors such as weather or electrical interference. Sonic leases the copper lines from the incumbent local carrier (AT&T) and this can cause delays in support and maintenance as opposed to a wholly owned network such as Sonic Fiber. DSL is significantly slower than Fiber. Further, the copper infrastructure is due to be discontinued in the coming years as technology transitions to Fiber.
- IPBB-C also utilizes legacy copper infrastructure to deliver DSL and voice service. Like Fusion DSL, IPBB-C shares the same technology constraints as listed above. Unlike Fusion DSL, Sonic does not lease these lines and the service is resold directly from AT&T. AT&T handles the installation and equipment which may delay support and maintenance. IPBB-C also utilizes the same technology that is slated to be discontinued in the coming years.
- IPBB-F is resold AT&T Fiber. IPBB-F will deliver performance similar to Sonic Fiber but since the installation, network and equipment is managed by AT&T, support and maintenance may be delayed. Sonic also offers faster service than available on AT&T Fiber in some markets.
Does Sonic Fiber include a land-line powered phone line? Will my phone work in an emergency? - Sonic Fiber voice service is delivered with VoIP (Voice-over-IP) technology. Traditional land lines are powered from the central office and typically are operational when utility power is out. A battery backup device can be utilized with Sonic Fiber to ensure operation of both VoIP service and network connectivity during a power outage. A battery backup device can be purchased from a wide variety of retailers.
